Qualities required to become an officer in Defence?

Combined Defence Services is one of the best and most respected career options of the country. It gives an opportunity to serve our country selflessly. One can join Indian Defence services by cracking the following examinations:

  1. National Defence Academy
  2. Combined Defence Academy Examination
  3. AFCAT Examination
  4. Direct Entry Scheme
  5. University Entry Scheme

Essential Required to Join Defence 

  • You must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease.
  • You must be Citizen of India, Bhutan, Nepal.
  • The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cms. (162.5 cms for Air-Force).
  • You should be able to read in a distant vision chart 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in worse eye with or without glasses.
  • You are advised to keep Yourself in good physical condition, by following the undermentioned routine :
  • Running 2.4 km in 15 minutes
  • Skipping
  • Pushups and sit ups (minimum 20 each)
  • Chin ups (minimum 08)
  • Rope climbing - 3-4 metres.

All the above requirements one needs to fulfil to be eligible for Indian Defence services.  The eligibility criteria vary from post to post, but these are the minimum qualifications required to apply for CDS. Besides this you have to be a Graduate in any field and age should be between 19 to 25 years.

Essential QUALITIES REQUIRED IN INDIAN ARMED FORCES OFFICERS

  1. Leadership: Leadership is the basic requirement of an Army officer. Besides guiding the team he should be able to control them too.  He should stand high in the crowd to give them the right direction.
  2. Initiative: Leadership is best worked if it is followed by the initiatives to work and motivate the team to work together. the leader should be active and must take part in all the decision making processes with the ideas of the team to improve upon the existing functions.
  3. Resourceful: The leader should be resourceful and work under all the circumstances to do the work assigned in time with the available resources.
  4. Communication Skills: The leader should be able to communicate his thoughts to his subordinates with clarity. If the thoughts and views are not conveyed properly then it will not be met with the way it should give the effective work.
  5. Self-confidence: It is the best quality that an officer must possess to give clear orders to the juniors to accomplish the desired targets.
  6. Decision Making: An officer should be able to take the decision of any situation with a wise option to avert any damage or accidents which are going to harm the team.
  7. Persuasiveness: It is an essential attribute that an officer must possess. He should be able to persuade his juniors for doing the assigned work in the right direction. If he fails to persuade his subordinates then he will not be able to meet his targets in time.

All these qualities are a must for a successful officer. Thus if anyone intends to be an army officer he must polish his personality to get these personality traits to be a successful leader.

Every year UPSC conducts Combined Defence Services Examination.
